  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
  • 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed)
  • ½ cup sugar (for filling)
  • 8 oz dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Stir in hot coffee.
  3. Divide batter among prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  4. For the orange filling: Whisk sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan; add orange juice and cook over medium heat until thickened. Stir in zest and butter; cool completely.
  5. For the ganache: Heat cream until steaming, pour over chopped chocolate; let sit then stir until smooth.
  6. Assemble by layering cakes with orange filling between each layer and pouring ganache over the top.
