  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 cup very cold salted butter, diced or grated
  • 3/4 cup pumpkin purée
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk (or milk), plus extra for brushing
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons buttermilk (or milk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • optional: 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ginger or cardamom

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and salt.
  2. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs.
  3. Stir in pumpkin puree, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until just combined.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface; fold gently until it holds together. Shape into an 8-inch circle and cut into wedges.
  5. Place the wedges on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes.
  6. Brush tops with buttermilk and bake for 13–15 minutes until golden.
  7. For the glaze, whisk powdered sugar with buttermilk and vanilla; drizzle over cooled scones.
